About the USA International Harp Competition

Every three years, outstanding harpists from all over the world converge on Bloomington, Indiana, transforming the Jacobs School of Music into the global epicenter of the harp. The USA International Harp Competition is among the world’s most prestigious competitions for the instrument, recognizing exceptional performers and fostering the careers of gifted young harpists. Founded by Susann McDonald and Linda Wood Rollo, the competition is led today by Artistic Director Elizabeth Hainen and Associate Artistic Director Emmanuel Ceysson.

Open to harpists of all nationalities between the ages of 18 and 32, the competition is distinguished by its rigorous four-stage format, designed to challenge competitors across a wide range of repertoire and performance settings. The first two stages consist of required repertoire, while the third stage features a recital-length solo program combining required works with free choice selections. The competition culminates in the final round, where the three finalists perform a harp concerto accompanied by a live orchestra.

Since its inception, the USA International Harp Competition has welcomed more than 500 elite harpists from over 30 countries to Bloomington, Indiana, all competing for the coveted Gold Medal and the opportunity to debut on the world stage. The competition has an impressive record of launching world-class careers, as demonstrated by the dozens of laureates touring the globe as soloists, teaching at premier music conservatories, and signing recording contracts.

The ten-day event offers much more than the competition itself. Past competition laureates return to Bloomington to present solo recitals, while young prizewinners from around the globe are featured in the Stars of Tomorrow concert. Through social gatherings, community activities, and the Host Family program, competitors are welcomed into the Bloomington community and have the opportunity to build meaningful connections with fellow musicians, local supporters, and families.

Bound by a shared passion for the harp, these musicians arrive as competitors but depart as friends. The international relationships forged in Bloomington continue long after the competition concludes, creating a lasting ripple effect of unity, peace, and mutual understanding that resonates across the globe.
